![]() AMATEUR SOCIETY FORCED TO POSTPONE SHOW UNTIL 2021 BUT PROMISE IT WILL BE SHREKTACULAR! Workington Amateur Operatic Society have announced that they are postponing their production of “Shrek the Musical” until next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The society was due to perform the family favourite at the Carnegie Theatre in October 2020 but it will now take place in October 2021, following the agreement of the licence holders. This is only the second time in 48 years that WAOS have had to reschedule a major production. In 1972 their October production of Fiddler on the Roof was postponed until the Spring of 1973, after the builders’ strike had held up modernisation work to the Carnegie Theatre delaying the completion date. Despite their disappointment WAOS are eagerly anticipating being able to perform to audiences again next year. They hope that they will be able to go ahead with plans for a full society concert featuring both the senior and junior sections performing West End favourites in Spring 2021. “ Shrek the Musical” Artistic Director Tony McGee said: It’s a huge shame that our plans for 2020 have had to be pushed back until next year. But by the time our shows reach our audiences we will have had the time to ensure they are spectacular. Tickets for “Shrek the Musical” will be on sale later in the year. Anybody who has bought tickets for the original date should contact the Carnegie Theatre if they have not already done so to re-arrange their booking.

![]() Workington Amateur Operatic Society are pleased to announce three productions for 2019-2020. After a number of modern productions including Starlight Express, Hairspray and our forthcoming production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, we are stepping back in time to the ‘Golden Age’ of musical theatre. Our Spring 2019 production of Carousel is a semi-staged concert version of the original show. It will see both our award winning junior section and our senior section join together to bring Rodgers and Hammerstein’s second musical triumph to life. The production will feature an orchestra, full cast and chorus. Katherine Jenkins and Alfie Boe took the lead roles in this concert version at the London Coliseum last April. The score of hit songs include; If I Loved You and You’ll Never Walk Alone. This is the first time WAOS has performed Carousel. Following the Rodgers and Hammerstein theme, in October 2019, WAOS are returning to The King and I. It was last performed by WAOS in 1965. Once again we will see the junior and senior sections join to produce another classic musical. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher. The score includes; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You and Shall We Dance. In 2020, we're ‘Puttin' On the Ritz’ with Top Hat - The Musical. Top Hat features music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and is based on the 1935 film of the same name. The first stage adaptation of Top Hat premiered in Milton Keynes in August, 76 years after the film was released. Let's Face the Music and Dance and I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket feature in the score. We find out the five showtunes Andrew McMinn would take with him to a desert island. Andrew is currently rehearsing for 'White Christmas' and plays the role of 'Phil Davis'. 'White Christmas' opens in the Carnegie Theatre, Workington on 27th November and runs until 2nd December 2017. Hello - Book of MormonA fitting start to the list, Hello! Combines that all too familiar feeling of your doorbell ringing with an immense amount if joy and laughter, making it one of the best openings to a musical I can imagine. Just try and listen to it without cracking a huge grin! |
