NODA Review - Katharine Carradus
Well, Rydell High certainly opened with a bang. It was great to see the stage full of over 50 members aged 8 - 18 years of age. They certainly looked as though they were all really enjoying themselves. The boys had taken on the roles of teenage boys in the late 1950`s, sporting heavily gelled hair and black leather motorcycle jackets, while the girls favoured full skirts and the famous Pink Lady jackets.
Danny was well played by Daniel White, shifting between the love sick teenager and hard member of the Gang. He was ably matched by Sandy played by Evie Askew. She portrayed her as a naïve young girl which contrasted well with the Pink Ladies. She totally transformed in the last scene when she appeared in her black skin tight outfit. ‘Wow’. Both boys and girls produced some good singing. I especially liked Rizzo played by Becca Milligan and Kenickie played by Connor McClenan.
The ‘Beauty School Dropout’ number proved to be popular with the audience. The costumes in this number and throughout the show were very good and there was lots of attention to details. The 2nd. Act got off to a very good start with ‘Shakin at the High School Hop’ and ‘Born to Hand Jive’ Natasha and Tony had obviously spent a lot of time with the cast on these two numbers and it certainly paid off . It took me back to my teenage years.
The set was good, the cast made good use of the different levels, and special mention must go to the ‘red car’ used in ‘Greased Lightnin’ . It appeared on stage as if by magic. The cast worked very well with the Performance Tape. Well done to Liz Condron, in fact well done everybody for a super show. Everybody came out with a smile on their faces and a song on their lips.
Thank you.
