NODA Review - Katharine Carradus
The story of the rise of Eva Duarte from a small town girl to actress, to mistress and then the wife of one of the most forceful men of her country, to the President’s wife and finally to semi-sainthood in the eyes of the peasant folk of Argentina.
As the crowds gather for Eva’s funeral we are introduced to Che Guevara played excellently by Tony McGee who takes centre stage in this musical. Tony has great stage presence and he took us through the various facets of the rise of Evita, and his singing of ‘Oh What a Circus’ and all the others songs were well executed, this was a super performance all round.
Stuart Buchanan gave a good interpretation of the tango singer Magaldi, and Peter McGuckin as Juan Peron performed exceedingly well as the authoritative bearing President. I was very impressed with Sophie Mills as Peron’s discarded mistress, she delivered her solo ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, quite beautifully and with exemplary clarity, very well done Sophie. Kimberley Fisher as Evita combines a very strong singing voice with excellent acting, making the transition from wannabe actress to Argentina’s iconic power dressed lady with ease, she looked lovely in her white dress. I was not too sure about the wig, I liked the final wig which to me was more Evita. I thought that all the principles gave their all. The ensemble and crowd scenes with their banners were well choreographed and all very well sung, ‘A New Argentina’ was very powerful.
All the hard work that everyone had put into the production paid off, lots of attention to detail from hairstyles, costumes and footwear – attention to detail paid off! Also I liked the set, the transition of each of the scenes was smoothly carried out and we were transported effortlessly from location to location.
The orchestra was as always very well balanced and we had very good sound and lighting. Thank you Workington for a most entertaining evening of theatre.
